Redwood country

We couldn’t bring ourselves to set an alarm this morning so consequently didn’t leave Fort Bragg until late morning, fuelled by waffles and coffee, our destination today, Arcata about 140 miles north. The road today would hug the coast again for twenty six miles until eventually winding inland to join Highway 101. Like the last two days a soft sea fog had settled just off shore, heavier in some places than others. The GPS suggested at 1245 that I had been driving for two hours and should take a break so we took the next exit to the little town of Garberville and indulged in the all day breakfast menu. (Which was actually the only menu!) Suitably rested and refreshed it was into the Rogue and onward to the famed Avenue of the Giants. This is the most accessible part of the nearly 52,000 acres of giant redwood trees the area is famous for and not to be missed. Photos (mine anyway) do not do this area justice, these trees are simply magnificent, the tallest around 30 stories high.

You can just see Russell, bottom right of this fallen giant

Dragging ourselves away from the redwoods ( we will see more in the coming days) it was back on the main highway and ultimately to Arcata, our home for the next three nights.

Our self contained apartment above the owners garage proved to be compact but very well appointed and within walking distance to the local ‘market’ (grocery store) where everything appeared to be organic and was priced accordingly 🤣 I think I saw more brands with koalas and kangaroos on the label there than I would in an Australian supermarket !

I was impressed though with the rosé in a can.

My kind of picnic drink!

I think tomorrow might be a rest day from driving, perhaps a leisurely stroll downtown to check out the shops?
