Off to the Old Country

Never have we needed a holiday as much as this one. Both of us have had extremely busy times both at work and home with the final part of the new kitchen only installed the morning we left!

We departed Adelaide on Emirates in the evening and despite being on day two of a head cold (not recommended), the first glass of bubbles hit the spot.

With the aid of copious amounts of alcohol and pharmaceuticals (do as I say not as I do), I sniffed and coughed my way to Dubai but also managed a reasonable amount of sleep as well.

There was time for a quick shower in Dubai and then on to London, Gatwick where we were processed relatively efficiently and then on the way to a nearby hotel which serves as the Thrifty depot. Here we encountered an unexpected problem – our requested car was not available so ” we have upgraded you to a brand new Mercedes E class.”

Sounds great but half an hour later we were still in the car park with the manual trying to decipher advanced German technology! Turns out it's a diesel/electric hybrid, great for fuel economy but challenging for jet lagged new players 🙂 Eventually we were on our way in Murray the Merc, trusting Pamela (the GPS with a plum in her mouth who says 'please' a lot), to deliver us to Brockenhurst in the New Forest.

Some three hours later (delays on the motorway so via the 'scenic route') we arrived at Daisybank Cottage B&B, our accommodation for the next three nights.

Here, the ponies, donkeys and cattle have right of way.

This is the countryside that hundreds of 'pony books' are set in and then feverishly consumed by horse mad girls living half a world way in Australia who can only imagine “leafy green bridle paths” and the adventures therein

Aahhh sigh….. With a 4.30 am wake up, what better way to start the day than pony hunting? This is quintessential England that we in parched Australia can really only imagine until you see if for yourself.
