I never would have considered myself an architecture buff but this trip has the potential to change all of that – at least whilst we’re here anyway.
On our last day in Barcelona we wanted to check out another recommendation from our Aussie conference friend and that was the Palace of Catalan Music.
It was built between 1905 and 1908 (not by Gaudí!) for a local choral society.
The glass dome in the ceiling is made up of 2000 pieces of glass!
Guided tours take roughly an hour, they are the only way to see it unless you go to an actual performance (which still happen on a daily basis) and it was very worthwhile.
Of course Spain is also famous for its tapas and today was the day we decided to give that a go for lunch. For those reading who are not familiar with the ‘real’ tapas ……. basically involves small serves of all types of delicacies that are lined up on the bar and you choose which ones you would like. They are then heated (if appropriate) and served to you with your drinks. You can have as many servings as you like and the bill is totalled up as you go!
The choices can be overwhelming! We were later to find that in Southern Spain it is more customary to order drinks and then be served tapas included in the price. People commonly go from bar to bar, having a drink and different tapas in each – a new meaning for pub crawl?
To finish off on a culinary note, we quickly dropped in to the famous La Boqueria market just off Las Ramblas. They were beginning to pack up but the range of produce was amazing – it is said there is nothing you can’t buy here food wise.
Most of the produce looked very enticing ………(very big on fruit and juices)
but I’m afraid some I had to pass on…….
Yep, that would be your sheeps head, bollocks and penises.
Perhaps next time!
