Friday greeted us with more stunning sunshine.
After attending to some shopping essentials we decided to check out the ‘e bike’ situation which sounded like a perfect option for horse riders! Basically these are regular looking bikes with battery powered “pedal assist.”
Having handed over the cash, signing the waiver and donning our helmets we set off with some trepidation…. our aim to cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge, down into Sausalito and return via the ferry.
After the first five minutes I was sold! Who knew bike riding could be enjoyable???
I do admit to feeling a tad guilty as we zoomed past (younger, fitter) fellow cyclists on the uphill but then realised we are just being sensible and conserving energy.
We have another four weeks of holidaying to go yet! No sense peaking too soon.
The bridge is 1.6km long and was packing serious cross winds at some points but we managed to stay upright despite heavy traffic ( in the bike lane!) and made it to the other side for another photo stop and a chat with a family visiting from Chicago. Their sons wanted to know which football team we followed. I was puzzled by the question from Americans and of course immediately answered ‘the Crows’ then started laughing when I realised they thought we were British 🤣 A short education on the merits of Australian rules and then we were off on the (mostly) downhill section into Sausalito.
We had been told not to miss the last ferry back at 7pm and we were surprised to find a queue forming when we arrived at six. Unfortunately no time to check out the shops but we were close to the front of the queue and secured a good spot on the top level of the ferry where we again ran in to our new friends from Chicago.
The glorious weather had bought all manner of sailing craft out on to the water and we watched a couple of very close encounters with the ferry, clutching our plastic cups of rosé anxiously 😱
The scenic trip back took us past Alcatraz again ( where we were able to recount the salient points of history to our friends thanks to last night’s trip) and eventually back into Fisherman’s Wharf where a ten minute cycle saw us safely returning our trusty steeds.
A quick detangle of the hair and change of clothes and we were in the dining room of Sears Fine Food around the corner from our hotel. Their website claims ....it feels like it’s remained untouched in 70 years… and they’re not wrong! Despite our initial concerns, the meal and service were excellent and we retired with full bellies to once again fall into bed.
Tomorrow we head north 🚘
